Community Opportunities

It is our desire to embrace the concept of community, not just in our church body as important as that is, but in the broader community context in which we live.

Below we will list community ministry opportunities as they arise or are brought to our attention.  Please check back to see how you can be involved in the Montrose area community.

- Interfaith (Public Ave, Montrose) runs a used clothing store and also helps people with other needs.  To volunteer, call 278-1776.

Interfaith is currently in need of seasonal clothing.  Please take all clothing donations directly to Interfaith on Public Ave. in Montrose.

IMPORTANT:  it has been brought to our attention that red clothing boxes are appearing around the area with USAgain written on them.  BEWARE. USAgain is a for profit organization that is selling the clothes overseas for a profit.  It is not charity nor is it going to local folks in need.  According to an article at Time.com this organization is "run by Scandinavians associated with a secular cult whose leaders are on trial in Denmark for tax fraud and embezzlement."  Make sure you know where your clothing is going.  Keep it local.

- Heartland Hospice Services is looking for volunteers to visit terminally ill patients.  Training will be provided at no cost.  Volunteering offers encouragement to both the patient and family.  It gives the patient something to look forward to and provides a needed break, even for a half-hour, for the family caregiver. For more info or to volunteer, contact Brittany Bisel at 570-654-0220.

- Tutors needed in reading and math for Susquehanna County Literacy Program.  This is a great opportunity to build relationships with those struggling with literacy.  Training is provided.  For more info or to volunteer, contact Marilyn at 570-465-2880 or email sclp@epix.net.

- First Responders in disaster emergencies needed.  Susquehanna County is being broken up into six districts for the purposes of disaster emergency management.  Each of these districts is looking to develop a team of first responders who can assess the immediate needs and call in appropriate assistance.  Full training will be provided by theRed Cross.  If you are interested, contact the Susquehanna County Chapter of theRed Cross at 570-278-1427.

- Area Agency on Aging is looking for volunteers for a variety of tasks such as driving, bringing meals, visiting, etc. to elderly folks in the county.  If you are interested in participating in this kind of outreach, contact Beverly Griffiths at 570-278-3751 or 800-634-3746.
