Our senior high teens are about to embark upon an exciting urban missions trip. We'll join Children's Bible Fellowship in New York City as we reach out to kids with the love of Jesus.
Who is Children's Bible Fellowship of New York?
CBF is an interdenominational ministry that has been making disciples of New York's forgotten fields for over 50 years. Headquartered in the town of Carmel, NY, north of NYC, the campus includes Camp Hope for mentally and physically handicapped children of NYC and Camp Joy for inner city children. CBF also has an Urban Team that ministers in the Bronx in coordination with a local church plant to insure healthy discipleship of those who become followers of Christ.
What is Project Genesis? Project Genesis is a short-term missions
program hosted by CBF. The program is designed to be a low
stress – high impact" exposure trip or "Missions 101." Teams will
see aspects of the inner-city, this is not hard-core, inner-city
ministry. Our trip includes two to three days of children's ministry
in the Bronx with the CBF Urban Team, a one day work project at
the camp, and a guided exposure trip into the city to see the
diverse cultures and spiritual needs of the "Big Apple." Groups
often get to try their hand at music ministry, skits, face panting,
and puppets – the sky is the limit!
Where do Project Genesis groups stay? Groups are housed in
cabins at the Carmel campus. Once a group arrives, the CBF staff
provide a comprehensive program, even transporting groups to and
from the city on their bus.
What is the projected cost per student?
Our per person cost based on 15 participants is $450.
Bottom line, what is the risk factor of doing urban ministry?
In the words of the Project Genesis director: "Safety and health are among our top priorities. We are not interested in placing our full time staff in danger, let alone students who are entrusted to us. We are in the city by day-out by night and are thoroughly acquainted with the neighborhoods in which we minister. Our trained staff never leave a team to minister alone and we never minister in neighborhoods that knowingly pose a physical risk. We welcome pre-trip phone calls from parents who have questions or concerns."
Date of trip: July 19 - 26
1. What qualifications are necessary to go on the trip? Applicants must be 1) a high school student attending Montrose E-Free, 2) a Christian with a desire to grow spiritually and 3) be a team player that is willing to eat what is set before us and a worker who will do whatever is asked – with a smile!
2. What’s housing like? … is the food good?
We will have two private camp cabins on the CBF camp property outside the City. Yes, there's electricity and indoor plumbing! Meals will be served daily in the camp dining hall. Bag lunches or restaurant meals are provided when we are away from the camp property.
3. What can I expect to learn? We will be stretched spiritually, grow in unity as a group, and expand our passion for missions by serving in a cross-cultural setting. A daily devotional program will help students get to know God and themselves better. You will also learn about placing other's needs ahead of your own and finding your place in this world.
4. What exactly will we be doing? There's a little bit for everybody from work projects to children's ministry. Everyone will get to be involved in singing or skits or face painting! There will also be a morning Bible study time.
5. Is there a dress code? Neat, modest, and clean is the primary guideline. For both men and women, shirts must cover the waistline when arms are extended. No strapless tops or spaghetti straps for gals. No sleeveless shirts for guys.
6. Are there any rules I need to know about? Refrain from all illegal substances such as alcohol, tobacco, or narcotics. Fighting, profanity, and romantic physical contact are not allowed. Respect fellow youth group members and your leaders. Participate in all scheduled activities. NO CELL PHONES (CBF guideline). Video games and headphones are limited to Saturday travels.
7. What do I need to pack? One week's worth of clothing, including two outfits suitable for church, bedding, towel/washcloth, and toiletries. Please limit yourself to one piece of luggage and a carry-on size bag.
8. Will we get to do any sightseeing? Do I need extra spending money? There will be sightseeing, but not at Macy's or Bloomingdales, etc! You may wish to have money for snacks and souvenirs.
9. Do you have an idea of our schedule?
